Being a small business owner is a combination of skill, resilience and a tonne of hard work.

It can be a lonely road, filled with moments of self-doubt and frustration, amongst wins and moments of excitement.

As someone who has been a business owner for over six years, currently on my second business, which commenced as a side hustle, I’ve found these tips to be my go-to when approached by start-ups wanting to know the hidden secrets of my success.

Have a plan, but be ready to pivot Without a plan, nothing will get done and you won’t be able to identify your success and what the next milestone is. A plan can help you know where you are going next, but also help you identify when things are not working and need to be adjusted or when a pivot is required.

Know your values, and don’t compromise on them

In my experience, if the opportunity, offer or client is not aligned with your values it can soon become more work than what it’s worth, or worse negatively impact on you and your brand. Knowing what your values are, both as a person and as a business will help you see the red flags early on and help you avoid frustrations and time wasted.

Trust your gut, especially when hiring staff

If it seems too good to be true, then it probably isn’t that good. If something doesn’t seem quite right do your homework, give yourself the time you need and always trust your instincts. The rushed, wrong decision will do you more damage than waiting and pushing out your deadlines.

Do what you do best, and outsource the rest

This seems obvious coming from a Life Assistant, but I proactively seek other people to action tasks I’m not skilled in so I can focus on the things I excel at. What initially may seem like an expense will likely be an investment in your business and will free you up to explore the areas you thrive in.

Think big!

Are you limiting yourself because you’re just starting out? Pitch to that big client, email the podcast host, put your hand up to speak on your subject matter. Be brave, think big and put yourself out there, because, in the end, no one else is going to do it for you.

Your inner circle will be your sanity

Have a group of business owners you can call on for the highs and the lows. They understand what it’s like to be in business and will be your biggest advocates, challenging you to be the best version of yourself whilst growing your incredible businesses.
